Tools for Innovation

Last week, Wharton Innovation & Design Club partnered with the Wharton Technology Club to present tools you can use for innovation. We had a packed house as we talked through websites, tools and technologies you can leverage to bring ideas to life. Here are three key takeaways from the event:

First, tools are vast. Click here for our presentation and a full(er) list of free or affordable tools across research, analytics and prototyping. We only scratched the surface during the lunch hour, but if there are specific tools or areas we didn't cover, let us know in the comments section below.

Second, tools are easy. You don't need to have a computer science background or design expertise to create websites or prototype. Most platforms and apps are intuitive and come with substantive customer support. You can also leverage your Penn network. Our presenters were all Penn students who are more than happy to help you throughout your innovation process.

Third, tools help you execute on your ideas, but remember to keep in mind other resources you have to first explore and define user needs through the design thinking process. Come check out our needfinding workshop with Penn's Integrated Product Design Program Associate Director Sarah Rottenberg next Wednesday, 18 Nov. Sarah will be walking through how you can better understand your users and build products and services that actually meet their needs.

Happy Innovating!

ProductHack!

On Saturday, 11/15 we teamed up with the Tech Club and took over 2401!  Fifteen teams competed to address customer needs spanning three tech product categories:

  1. FinTech & Payments
  2. Retail IT & Customer Analytics
  3. Healthcare IT & Connected Health.

Throughout the day, the Innovation & Design Education Team guided ProductHackers through an immersive workshop covering the five stages of design thinking (examine, define, ideate, prototype, and test) from start to finish. Led by Greta Carlson and Justine Lai, the workshop began with a fun warm-up exercise of Ninja, which got everyone’s creative juices flowing. During the examine stage, ProductHackers learned about need-finding and looked to each other’s experiences to determine what mattered most to potential users. From there, teams focused their attention on a specific need during the define phase, during which the teams utilized the Education Team’s rubric to narrow their scope. In the afternoon, teams were unleashed, using their ascertained needs as the basis for a plethora of ideas, from wristband gizmos to luxury shopping doodads. They tested their ideas and received feedback from others, which they used to prototype and refine their products throughout the afternoon.

The results? 15 awe-inspiring product creations that wowed the judges, which included Peter Bressler (founder of the Bressler Group), Mark Yim (Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics), and David Robertson (Wharton Professor of Innovation and Product Development). The first place cash prize of $500 and hardware prize of $200 (and entry into Pennvention) went to Wrapit (Paul Ginart P’MD-PhD, Kunal Nayyar WG’16, & Eva Wei WG’16) for their innovative wristband technology that helped in monitoring elderly loved ones. The second place prize went to Pied Piper (Monica Myers WG’16, Alden Gordon WG’16, John Chen WG ’16) for their hospital transfer system that matches patients with emergency beds. And amongst tough competition, the $200 software prize went to BasketHound (Swathi Rao WG’16, Ben Peskoe WG’16 & Greg Dubin WG’16) for their shopping app that helps consumers find that specific must-have product. Congratulations to the winners and to all ProductHack teams for an inspiring and excitement-filled day. Interested in building similar skills and being a ProductHacker? Come to Innovation & Design Club’s Design Wednesdays, and look out for ProductHack 2015 coming soon!

Ideation Session with Sarah Rottenberg and the xLab

Ideation Session with Sarah Rottenberg and the xLab

The Wharton Innovation and Design Club was excited to have Professor Sarah Rottenberg, the Associate Director of Penn's Integrated Product Design Masters Program and a co-founder of the xLab, come this past Wednesday to teach a session on ideation. The session was a great success and resulted in some really interesting and creative fitness product ideas by Wharton Innovation and Design Club members!

To start the session Sarah walked the group through the xLab’s mission, which is to bring entertainment beyond the screen by creating content coupled products that leverage the cloud to create innovation in entertainment and wellness technologies. The xLab develops these products by following user-centered design practices which involve following a cycle of user observations, interpretations, directions and solutions. To begin the ideation step, Sarah presented user research about home fitness that her xLab team pulled together earlier this year. We learned that most people fell on the spectrum of needing help getting a routine started, or help with continuing their current fitness routine. In fact, people have such difficulty motivating themselves to work out that studies have shown that they would even pay a service to restrict their favorite media (TV shows, music, audio books) to times when they are working out to encourage them to exercise more often! Sarah then finished the presentation by distilling the user research into 5 opportunity spaces of untapped needs that future home fitness products could have the possibility to bring new value to consumers. The members were then split up into teams based on these opportunity spaces to come up with new and creative product ideas. After the first ideation session on the opportunity spaces, Sarah had each team switch their product idea with another group and refine their design based on an assigned brand.

How did everyone get their creative juices flowing? A plethora of great ideation inspiration supplies (mostly craft supplies from a local dollar store) helped team members mock up their ideas into rough prototypes as they were explaining them. As we learned, a great ideation session can be anywhere and help solve any problem as long as you follow these rules.

9 habits of good ideators

  1. Listen to different voices.

  2. Headline your idea.

  3. Ask stupid questions.

  4. Encourage wild ideas.

  5. Build on other people’s ideas.

  6. Go for quantity.

  7. Speak your doubts. Then help resolve them.

  8. Be visual.

  9. Make bad ideas better.

At the end of the session, our members presented their great ideas with the rough prototypes they had constructed (be visual!). Here’s a small sample of the many great product ideas that were showcased:

  • A Trader Joes fitness tracker that earns you discounts on your groceries.

  • A Facebook dumbbell that takes selfies to brag to all of your friends about how great your workout was.

  • A Tiffany exercise necklace that projects a hologram of your favorite celebrity to work out with you.

  • Lululemon pants that turn a bright color when you haven’t worked out in a while.

We are excited to have people refine these ideas further at the next prototyping session on 11/19!

** D&I Wednesday: Generating Creative Ideas

When: 11/5 from 12-1:20pm Where: JMHH G55

Want to brainstorm new product ideas at the intersection of technology, fitness and design, and also learn techniques on how to run your own brainstorming sessions?

Wharton's Design & Innovation Club is partnering with xLAB, and Penn's Integrated Product Design Master's program for its two upcoming Ideation and Prototyping workshops!

Who should attend? Anyone interested in design thinking, fitness enthusiasts, technologists, aspiring entrepreneurs, and anyone who thinks any of the above sounds like fun.

At our upcoming workshop, Generating Creative Ideas, Sarah Rottenberg, the Associate Director of Penn's Integrated Product Design Masters Program and a co-founder of the xLab, will be presenting the results of interviews conducted with potential users on home fitness needs. We'll be using this research as the basis of a fun and interactive brainstorming workshop to develop new product ideas to potentially move forward with after the session!

The skills you build in the workshop can be used to help drive your ideation sessions for: * that startup you're building, * your upcoming team paper topic, * or an upcoming business plan challenge!

This will be the third workshop in the Design Wednesday's design thinking workshop series, aimed to help you learn tools and strategies to enable innovation within your teams and project.

Our next workshop, "Prototyping and Testing Your Ideas" on 11/19 will be building off product ideas generated in this workshop, so we encourage you to come to both!

Lunch is provided!

** D&I Wednesday

Join Wharton Entrepreneurship and Professor Karl Ulrich, Vice Dean of Innovation for: Technology Push, Market Pull, and the Search for Product-Market Fit

When: 10/1, 12- 1:30pm Where: JMHH 265

Innovation opportunities are sometimes born of technological possibility and sometimes of emergent customer needs. The first challenge for most new ventures is to find product-market fit; the matching of a solution and a need. This workshop outlines the three key questions that every start-up must answer in order to create value, and illustrates methods for answering those questions. The insights are valuable both for those entrepreneurs pursuing opportunities based on a new technology and for those attempting to find a solution for a need they have identified.

** WPP MBA Fellowship Program

The WPP MBA Fellowship is comprised of three one year rotations through WPP companies, with each rotation chosen on the basis of the individual’s interests and the Group’s needs. The multi-disciplinary rotation is unique in the industry and grooms future leaders. On completion of the Program, we work to find a position within the Group that takes advantage of the broad experience gained during the rotational Program. While most assignments are likely to be located in North America, other locations are possible.

The application for the 2015 WPP MBA Fellowship Program is now available on our website athttp://www.wpp.com/wpp/careers/marketing/mbas/. The program is aimed at developing high caliber management talent and provide experience across a range of marketing disciplines. Positions will be awarded to applicants who obtain an MBA from August 2014 – July 2015. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, October 15th at 11:59pm EST.

The WPP MBA Fellowship Program will also be making an on-campus presentation for Wharton second year MBA students on Tuesday, October 7th at 12:15pm - 1:00pm in Jon Huntsman Hall. We will also be holding coffee chats from 2pm - 4pm on Tuesday, October 7th at the UPenn Bookstore Starbucks.

** Marketing and Data Science Internship at Pymetrics

Help out with a startup with a low time commitment, part-time "internet-ship" over the school year! An MIT / HBS startup, pymetrics (http://whartondesignclub.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d073e07989ca2b0053218c9de&id=41a0a5225b&e=4b88744fb2) uses neuroscience + data science to transform career assessment + recruiting into an easy, accurate, and enjoyable process. pymetrics replaces questionnaires with neuroscience games, and the guessing done in resume reviews with data science. Students use the platform for free career fit assessment, and through it are matched with companies using our platform for recruiting. Think LinkedIn meets OkCupid! Through this part-time internship, you will be an ambassador that helps market an early stage brand and get immersion in big data. If interested, email jess@pymetrics.com.
